RAT BEHAVIOR DURING THE COVID PERIOD
For a rat to survive, it needs a food source and a water source. Mainly applying to built up areas such as towns and cities, COVID has allowed and encouraged the rat population to go further afield, as their normal food sources have not been available, so to keep feeding, they are now exploring further away from their own ground and venturing into residential properties and becoming more daring to obtain food. There have been many reports in the media of rats accessing properties through open doors and windows, even with the residents in the same room. Rats are excellent climbers and can easily scale a wall to access somewhere if they smell something that attracts them.
Rats have always been known to gain access to properties through the toilet/sewage systems. Reports of rats doing so, accessing properties through the sewers have significantly increased recently. They love pipes and very curious what is on the other side of that pipe, hence your toilet becoming an entry into your property. If they find that there is somewhere to explore the other end, they will keep returning, especially when they can smell food.
Always close your toilet seat after use. When lifting the seat before use, stand clear, just in case!
DISEASES CARRIED BY RATS
Rats carry many mites, bugs, parasites and diseases hazardous to health, including death in severe cases.
Leptospirosis (often referred to as Weil's disease) most common illness
Salmonella
Listeria
Toxoplasma gondii
Hantavirus.
Rats constantly urinate everywhere. A myth is that they dont have bladders but they do. They urinate to communicate to other rats. This is the most common method of catching weil's disease by skin contact with urine.
RATS, WHAT DO THEY DO?
Rats are quite simply a severe problem that needs to get dealt with immediately even if you see just one. They will destroy pretty much everything in their path, from garden produce, to internal walls and cabling in your home and business premises as well as vehicles.
If a rat is inside your property cavaties then it can cause no end o damage costing you money and inconvenience. Not just your electrical but also your plumbing.
No matter if your in the city or the country, rats are everywhere. Because you dont see them, it does not mean you dont have them. If you see holes in your grounds, then you should take immediate action.
In those holes, there is a nest between six and fourteen young where the females can breed at three months of age producing further females, all breeding every three months. In just twelve months, you could be supporting a huge colony bringing more troubles to your doorstep.
A rat can also take great pleasure in exploring your vehicles. Your family car for example is a great playground for a rat. It has plenty of soft and hard materials to gnaw on as their teeth keep growing, so to keep them short, they will just keep gnawing on anything they can. Wiring looms being a favourite.
